His long lasting association with Government Medical College started in 1989 when he pursued MBBS. Post completing MBBS, Dr. Sharma did his one year rotatory internship at institute's Department of General Medicine and Department of Ophthalmology. It was the same institute from where he accomplished his MS in Ophthalmology. He further completed DNB in Ophthalmology from National Board of Examinations (New Delhi) and MCh in Ophthalmology from University of Seychelles American University of Medicine. Dr. Sharma also holds Diploma in Basic Science which he accomplished from International Council of Ophthalmology, Assessment in Ophthalmology Cambridge, UK.
In 1992, Dr. Sharma was appointed as an Assistant Surgeon through Public Service Commission. He has also worked as an 'Insurance Medical Officer' at ESI Hospital Bari Brahamana, 'Registrar' in the Department of Ophthalmology of Govt. Medical College (Jammu), an 'Assistant Surgeon' at District Hospital Udhampur, and 'Medical Officer' of Govt. Medical College's (Jammu) Eye Bank Department of Ophthalmology.
